Tips For Caring For New Porcelain Veneers

Posted on

Have you decided to get porcelain veneers to change the look of your teeth? You are going to need to know the following tips in order to take care of your new veneers once you head home after the procedure.

Maintain The Porcelain Glaze

The reason that your teeth look so great right after getting porcelain veneers is that there is a glaze on the veneers. Maintaining that glaze is key to ensuring that the veneers continue to shine like the day you got them. Thankfully, a dentist should know how to help you do that. The dentist is going to need to do things a bit differently during your regular cleanings. They'll want to avoid fluoride treatments and heavy polishing of the veneers to keep them shiny.

Brush And Floss Regularly

Part of caring for dental veneers is to simply brush and floss your teeth as you normally do. This helps keep plaque off the surface and keeps the teeth behind the veneers healthy. However, this is easier said than done. If the reason you need dental veneers is that you lacked the proper home care, then you may continue to neglect your teeth after you get veneers installed. Brushing and flossing are still important, even if the veneers are porcelain surfaces that hide cosmetic problems.

Avoid Chewing Hard Objects

It is possible to break your dental veneers by chewing on hard objects. This is common if you are the type of person that chews on eye cubes or bites on your pen during the day. You need to learn how to break these habits so that your veneers do not break. One way that you can do this is to chew sugar-free gum during the day. That may be enough to stimulate your need to chew on something, and stop you from putting pens into your mouth.

Use A Night Guard For Teeth Grinding

Do you have a history of grinding your teeth while you are sleeping? You'll want to wear a night guard when you go to sleep in order to prevent damage to your new veneers. That grinding motion is going to put pressure on your veneers, which can cause them to crack. A night guard can help keep your teeth separated just enough so that they do not touch, which will eliminate that problem with teeth grinding.
